HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — In double overtime, the Pisgah Eagles defeated the Whitesburg Christian Warriors, 42-40.
The Whitesburg Christian Warriors put the first points on the scoreboard with :24 remaining in the first quarter.
Fox Tinker scored on a 2-yard Eagle touchdown with 10:52 remaining in the second quarter to tie the score 7-7. Whitesburg advanced the score to 14-7 with 5:01 remaining before the half. With :20 remaining before intermission, Pisgah scored on a 6-yard scamper into the endzone by Tinker. The extra point attempt by John Burke was good, tying the score 14-14.
With 9:49 remaining in the third quarter, Whitesburg took the 21-14 lead with a 13-yard touchdown. After Tanner Higdon recovered a fumble, Fox scored his third touchdown of the night for the Eagles. The point-after attempt failed, putting the Eagles behind 21-20 with 1:02 remaining in the third quarter.
Pisgah took the lead, with less than 3:00 remaining in the game, Freshman Mason Holcomb scored on a 3-yard quarterback keeper. Levi Arnold brought in the two-point conversion to take the Pisgah lead to 28-21 with 3:02 remaining in regulation play. Whitesburg tied the game 28-28 to go into overtime.
Whitesburg scored first in overtime, on a 10-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt failed, making the score 34-28. Pisgah scored on a Holcomb-to-Arnold connection. Whitesburg blocked the kick to tie the score 34-34.
In the second overtime, the Pisgah Eagles battled penalties and holding calls before Tinker scored on a 7-yard touchdown. Holcomb connected with Grant Smith for the two-point conversion, making the 42-34. Two-plays later, Whitesburg scored and went for two. The two-point conversion failed, giving the Eagles the 42-40 win.
Pisgah will have a bye week before taking on the North Sand Bisons on October 2.
