SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Perhaps one of Scottsboro’s most interesting and unique entertainment experiences resides in the back room of Pine Brothers Coffee Shop on the courthouse square.
Reverie Playhouse is a small theatre that features movies produced by independent filmmakers.
The theatre features a 12 ft by 8 ft screen, a projector, and sound system. It also boasts a stage for concerts and other performances. Red flip-up seats provide spectators with a vintage vibe during their viewing experience.
In addition to featuring filmmakers, the theatre also accepts submissions from bands, poets, storytellers, or any act they describe as “dreamy or fun”.
George Hartline, owner of Reverie Playhouse, detailed premiering the theatre.
“It all started back I guess it was in 2017,” said Hartline. “It wasn’t long after we had opened the coffee shop. I was thinking about how to introduce music into the shop without having it in the main area where people are studying, talking, or relaxing. That’s when we did the “Music and Coffee” shirts to raise some funds to renovate the back area. Well, it took a while but we finally made it happen.”
Hartline cut his teeth in the industry at the heart of American entertainment.
“I come from an entertainment background. I lived in Southern California for seven years and worked in Hollywood.”
Hartline also performed in a band called The Harmless Doves.
Hartline concludes, “I love movies, music, and arts of all kinds. I just wanted us to have a little something of our own here in Scottsboro that was independent and could feature a wide range of content.”
Reverie Playhouse adds a new cultural dynamic to Scottsboro which provides locals with a relaxing experience that radiates an artsy ambiance.
The coffee shop/theatre set up is precisely the type of attraction Scottsboro has longed for in the attempt to provide a hot spot for nightlife in the city.
Classic records, variety coffee and pastries, alongside a venue for live music and film viewings make for a timeless atmosphere. Patrons enjoy the classic feel of a vintage night out on the town at what is surely to be a frequented staple of the courthouse square.
