JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the body recovered today is the remains of Fred Swearengin.
Mr. Swaerengin, 72, was the man who, last September, walked into the Jackson County Courthouse, allegedly armed with a handgun. He was refused entry by courthouse security deputies, Swearengin drew his weapon and was shot.
Jackson County Grand Jury indicted Swearengin on an attempted assault first-degree charge.
The body was located in the management hunting area near Hytop area. Swearengin had been reported missing approximately one month ago. His vehicle was located in the area this week.
Swearengin was found about 400 yards from his vehicle. Authorities didn’t comment on a cause of death at this time.
